Julia ODE Solvers¶
Continuous-time reference solvers implemented in Julia via
DifferentialEquations.jl + LinearAlgebra. The suite acts as a
numerical ground truth for the stochastic computing / fixed-point
neuron implementations in :mod:sc_neurocore.neurons — any SC-path
divergence against the Julia ODE trace is a regression in the SC
implementation, not in the continuous reference.

1. Mathematical formalism¶
All 14 solvers discretise a first-order ODE of the form
$\dot{u} = f(u, p, t)$ on a fixed time span using
DifferentialEquations.jl's default 5ᵗʰ-order Runge-Kutta (Tsit5)
with dense output at saveat = 0.1. The per-equation formalism:
1.1 LIF (Leaky Integrate-and-Fire)¶

Default parameters: $\tau = 20$ ms, $V_\text{rest} = -65$ mV,
$V_\text{thresh} = -50$ mV, $I_\text{ext} = 15$ pA. No reset logic —
this is the sub-threshold linear dynamics only, used as the reference
for FixedPointLIFNeuron in the Rust engine.
1.2 Izhikevich (4-regime quadratic)¶

With reset rule $v \leftarrow c,\ w \leftarrow w + d$ when $v \ge 30$ mV. Four presets (Izhikevich 2003 Table 1):

1.3 Hodgkin-Huxley¶
The classical 4-state HH system (Hodgkin & Huxley 1952) with Na⁺, K⁺, and leak conductances:

Rate functions $\alpha, \beta$ use the original Hodgkin-Huxley expressions; default $C_m = 1$ µF/cm², conductances $g_\text{Na} = 120$, $g_\text{K} = 36$, $g_\text{L} = 0.3$ mS/cm².
1.4 FitzHugh-Nagumo (2D relaxation oscillator)¶

Canonical relaxation oscillator (FitzHugh 1961, Nagumo et al. 1962). Default $\tau_w = 12.5$, $a = 0.7$, $b = 0.8$.
1.5 Morris-Lecar (Ca²⁺ + K⁺)¶

bifurcation analysis in dynamical_analysis.jl.
1.6 AdEx IF (adaptive exponential)¶

1.7 Gamma oscillation (PING/ING)¶
Two-population rate equation:

where $\phi$ is a sigmoid activation. Generates gamma-band (30–80 Hz) oscillations when the E-I time-constant ratio and coupling strengths lie in the Hopf-bifurcation regime (Wang 2010).
1.8 Memristor I-V (Biolek model)¶

with window function preventing $x$ from leaving $[0, 1]$ (Biolek et al. 2009). Used as the Rust memristor bridge's continuous reference.
1.9 Predictive coding hierarchy¶

two-level predictive-coding network (Rao & Ballard 1999); $g$ is a sigmoid generative function, $\epsilon$ the prediction error.
1.10 Homeostasis PI controller¶
Continuous analogue of the Q8.8 discrete controller in
:doc:bioware §1.7 — proportional + integral negative feedback:

1.11 Quantum decoherence (Lindblad)¶

Two-level system with a single Lindblad dephasing operator; used as the reference for the quantum-bridge SC emulator.
1.12 STDP curve¶
Closed-form evaluator of the exponential pair rule (Bi & Poo 1998)
used by :doc:bioware §1.5 — primarily a correctness cross-check
rather than a full integrator call.
2. Theoretical context¶
The Julia suite exists as a numerical ground truth for SC-NeuroCore's fixed-point / SC implementations of the same neuron models. Three design decisions flow from that brief:
(i) Closed-form references. All 14 equations are canonical textbook models with decades of published analysis; each has a standard parameter set (Izhikevich 2003 Table 1, HH 1952, ML 1981, …). Running the SC-path version against these Julia traces is the primary sanity check for new SC-arithmetic optimisations.
(ii) Off-the-shelf solver stack. DifferentialEquations.jl +
Tsit5 is the widely-used reference stack in Julia's scientific
community (Rackauckas & Nie 2017). SC-NeuroCore does not attempt to
out-implement it; the subprocess model happily pays the Julia JIT
warm-up cost once per run so the main Python driver stays simple.
(iii) Subprocess isolation. Each run_dynamics call launches a
fresh julia process. No long-lived Julia state is kept between
calls, so the Python side is not coupled to PyCall / PythonCall
quirks. Trade-off: ~30 s cold start for the first call (JIT +
precompilation of DifferentialEquations.jl) amortises to ~0.5 s per
subsequent integration if the same process is reused manually; the
façade defaults to the one-shot pattern for simplicity.
Cross-language positioning. The Rust engine under
src/sc_neurocore/neurons/ targets throughput at the cost of
approximation (fixed-point + quantised time step); the Julia suite
targets correctness at the cost of wall-clock. Together they bracket
every neuron model: the Rust path is what runs on FPGA / production,
the Julia trace is what it is supposed to match. Discrepancies
1 % in mean firing rate against a Julia reference are treated as SC-path bugs.
3. Pipeline position¶
Julia is a reference path — it never sits on the SC inference hot
path. It lives beside the GPU / JAX / MPI backends under
src/sc_neurocore/accel/:

Inputs — an integer steps argument (the Julia script
internally sets tspan = (0, steps*dt)). Physical parameters are
compiled into the .jl scripts; override via editing the script
or adding a CLI layer.
Outputs — Julia prints timings + final state to stdout; the
Python façade does not capture or parse them by default. Run
the script directly when you need the trajectory back in Python
(subprocess.run(..., capture_output=True)).
Dispatch policy — explicit only. No core component silently
routes through Julia; users invoke :class:JuliaFusionSolver
directly for reference traces.

14 ODE models, 15 solver functions
Actual run on 2026-04-20: full-suite subprocess wall clock 24.56 s
(includes Julia startup + DiffEq.jl precompile on cold cache).
Per-solver timings drift ±15 % run-to-run because Julia's Tsit5
integrator adapts its step count to trajectory stiffness — the
committed bench harness runs a single pass and writes the exact
numbers to benchmarks/results/bench_julia_solvers.json for
regression tracking.
The 30 s wall clock is dominated by Julia JIT + precompilation of
DifferentialEquations.jl (~25 s on cold cache). The per-solve
numbers above are real — sub-millisecond for 2D / 4D systems
(FHN, ML, LIF, AdEx), a few ms for the 4-state HH. STDP Curve
at 4 µs is closed-form evaluation, not integration.

No configuration API — editing the .jl script is the intended
workflow. This keeps the Python surface minimal and the Julia side
free to evolve.

Each entry-point uses Tsit5() by default with saveat = 0.1.
Override by passing alg = Vern7() / saveat = 0.01 via the

All scripts share the same using DifferentialEquations header
so they can be loaded in a single Julia session by
include(...) if the caller wants to reuse a warm JIT cache.
7. Performance benchmarks¶
Measured on 2026-04-20 — Linux x86-64 (Intel i5-11600K, Julia 1.12.6
via juliaup, DifferentialEquations.jl v8.x, Tsit5 solver,
default saveat = 0.1). All numbers are real — copied from
the command output in §5.

Trend: 2D / 4D ODEs (LIF, FHN, ML, AdEx) run in < 1 ms. 4-state Hodgkin-Huxley at 2 ms reflects the higher evaluation cost of the exponential rate functions. The closed-form STDP curve at 4 µs is the honest lower bound when no ODE integration is required.

8b. Cross-validation with the Rust neuron zoo¶
Every Julia solver in §1 has a matching Rust implementation under
src/sc_neurocore/neurons/models/ (for Python-level orchestration)
and engine/src/neurons/ (for the SIMD hot path). The two stacks
are maintained side-by-side so any SC-path divergence against the
Julia trace is caught at test time. Correspondence table:

Regression tests in tests/test_model_hh.py,
tests/test_model_izhikevich.py, etc. seed the Rust path with the
same parameters as the Julia reference and assert mean firing rate
within 5 % and spike count within ±2 over a 1-second window.
The memristor (§9) is a hardware-only bridge with no Python/Rust
neuron wrapper; the Julia reference exists to validate the SPICE
netlist emitted by src/sc_neurocore/hdl_gen/memristor_crossbar.py.
8c. Reproducibility¶
fusion_solver.jlseeds all RNG-using sub-solvers explicitly; running the same script with the same parameters produces bit-identical trajectories across runs on the same host.- The Julia version pinned on the reference host is 1.12.6 via
juliaup. TheDifferentialEquations.jlversion resolves to the current registry tip; pin via aProject.tomlif byte-level reproducibility across major Julia releases is required. - Solver choice is a keyword argument on every entry point: change
alg = Tsit5()toVern7()/Rodas5P()/ any otherDifferentialEquations.jlalgorithm to trade off accuracy vs speed. saveat = 0.1matches the 10 ms / sample sampling SC-NeuroCore uses elsewhere; override withsaveat = 0.01if you need 100 kHz trajectories for fine-grained SC-path cross-checks.- Cross-host reproducibility requires matching Julia minor version + a
pinned
Manifest.toml; CPU micro-architecture (AVX2 vs AVX-512 vs NEON) only changes speed, not values, because the Tsit5 solver is deterministic floating-point.
9. Limitations¶
- Subprocess model. Not suitable for per-tick calls — Julia warm-up is ~25 s on cold cache, ~0.5 s on warm cache (single process). Use for offline reference traces or CI-gated regression checks, not for inference loops.
- No automatic parameter passthrough. Physical parameters live
inside the
.jlscripts. Edit the script or add a CLI layer infusion_solver.jlif you need Python-side parameterisation beyondsteps. - Output parsing is caller-owned. The Python façade does not
capture stdout by default. Redirect via
subprocess.run(..., capture_output=True)if you need the trajectory data back in Python. - One Julia process per call. JIT cache is lost between
run_dynamicsinvocations. For warm-cache reuse, run the Julia script manually from a long-lived process or switch to PythonCall.jl (out of scope for this façade). - Numerics match SC path in expectation, not bit-exact. The SC / Rust paths are fixed-point with quantised time steps; the Julia path is float64 with adaptive step Tsit5. Divergence below 1 % mean-firing-rate is expected; above 1 % is a regression signal.
